Post Halloween Gig

Shaun Of The Dead
And Ed
2 Zombie Barmen
1 Werewolf
Smurfs
1 Witch
A Little Girl Ghost
Leprechaun In Disguise
Tampon Head [you thought Pyramid Head was scary?!]

An impressive turnout of the unusual! Don't believe us? Watch out for the pictures I'll upload in the gallery. There's pictures of normal people too. Back to the gig, I know the band as well as the audience enjoyed themselves. We had people dancing outside in the street! When we played at Starbucks, people only wished they could dance, but they're in the middle of a shopping precinct so didn't.

Think we played for just over 2 hours, never the typical 45 min set :P It went pretty quick. We're not sure what happened to L...H...F, but we did just as well. The people aren't prepared yet to listen to the power of the two bands combined [sound like some 80's cartoon quote] heh.

If you missed out, shame on you! Nah, there's going to be plenty of other opportunities, we'll keep you posted. Whilst you're waiting, admire the pictures :)

It's been a while!

Things in the world of Surge are starting to get moving again, Thursday will be our first practice with Hate...Love...Fate..., we're both trying to get to the same place musically, el Ginjo played a set with them on Saturday that went amazingly well and if all goes to plan this could be the start of something sick!!

We're playing at Lily's Wine Bar's Halloween Party this Saturday so we hope to see you there.

Working with H...L...F... is going to
mean a new approach to writing and we will get material out to you asap.

PEACE!!

Songwriting

Well, during the break, El is going to dive into marital bliss, but I will be leading the band through some songwriting sessions!  Ultimately, the goal is to expand the trio into something more muscular and expansive, but its difficult to find other musicians in the area, but its also gratifying in that we have to work within our boundaries.  What we have is a work ethic and some ideas, and the songs are coming.

Jukebox

I'm not the super-technical person that El is, so it took longer than I hoped to get the music up, and it wasn't the actual site mechanics that were the issue either.  Anyway, for your listening pleasure, four previews of tracks, running to three minutes each, ahead of the launch of the J Hop E.P, music thats designed to get you moving yet give you the privacy of your own head.  Written and performed by El Ginjo on drums, Laura Jenner on saxaphone and Matt Blissett on bass guitar each track has been selected and refined into an aural blast of distilled groove.  Enjoy, and leave feedback either on Facebook or Twitter.

Approach

We have mainly been playing Starbucks in Great Yarmouth, as a trio, consisting of myself on bass, El on drums and Laura on sax.  The material is based around modal improvisations, and there are a few technique tricks that El and I have developed in order to play in a muted, more restrained style.

El is playing a stripped down kit, as much for aesthetics as for ease of transport and uses brushes a lot, I am using an accoustic-electric bass guitar, and using a lot of palm muting, but have switched to my Apollo with flatwound strings, its a much better instrument and certainly more stable, thanks to its fantastic design and craftsmanship.  Laura's sax isn't amplified in any way, so without deliberately referring to it, we harken back to the roots of bebop and r'n'b, without really trying.

The improvisations, due to the experience of El and I have their roots in rhythms, and this allows Laura to really blow out as a lead instrument, although I do have freedom to go forward within the framework of the moment.  The next stage will be working those peaks up into written compositions, and from there into song structures.

There is no pretence to what we are doing, no affectation just a desire to make good music and to make people move.  Stick with us, we will surprise you.
